I think there are some nice examples of great ideas and good artwork. The problem with all this is, that it only looks good for people with at 1600 pixel wide monitor.
If you just for arguments sake make your monitor 1024 pixels wide (use firesizer https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5792) you will find that almost all of the designs above look weird …

One thing is designing something that looks cool on your own screen, but if you want to be a pro make sure it works on a majority of uers screens.
